Researching into Registry software I saw on forums and software review sites that a lot of people had been burned by some dodgy products. Here's some of the things you need to look out for.
Researching into Registry software I saw on forums and software review sites that a lot of people had been burned by some dodgy products. Here's some of the things you need to look out for.
Common scams in PC Registry Software
Companies that don't offer Support
One of the most common complaints with any kind of software is with companies who sell the product, take your money, and then don't want to talk to you. Registry software is no different. There's some fly-by-night companies who won't give you support.
* SCAM BUSTER * Why not send an email to the company you're thinking of purchasing a tool from to see if you get a decent response? I do that all the time with internet companies. Ask them anything, something like 'will it work on XP?'
High priced software
I've mentioned this in my reviews, and elsewhere on this site, but some of the registry tools cost around $40 bucks, and don't do half the job that tools costing half as much do. If you have a quick look at my Which Tool page, you'll see that Regcure easily ($20) easily beats Error Nuker ($40). Price is no indication of quality with registry software.
Finding TOO MANY errors
This one sounds stupid, right? I mean isn't the sheer number of errors a tool finds on your computer an indication of quality? No. There's a lot more to it than that. Some software drastically inflates the number of errors they find! One tool reported 4000 (yes, four thousand!) errors on my computer. Definitely a scam to get you to buy the product.
Too FEW errors
While you should never base your registry repair tool purchase decision solely on the number of problems a tool can find, there's tools available that hardly find any errors. If you've had your PC a while, and a tool's reporting something like 100 - 200 errors in the registry that need repairing, there's something seriously wrong.
Zero Updates to the software
Any good software tool should be updated regularly to iron out bugs, make improvements and to keep up-to-date with any changes in your computer's operating environment. Another huge complaint I saw over and over in my research was people who had bought a product that hadn't been updated for OVER A YEAR. That's totally unacceptable.
Mysterious Errors Detected
Any good registry tool will be totally transparent and tell you exactly what the errors are that it's found. Unbelievably, some registry repair tools don't. They just give the user a list of problems, or even just a number of problems, and then ask if you'd like to fix them. Both the help files and the software should clearly report what problems are on your PC.
You're not getting your money back!
Lots of people have bought registry software, decided it wasn't for them, or found it didn't work as expected, and found that they couldn't get a refund for it. This is disgraceful.
Scam Buster: When you're buying software on the Internet, always check out a site's Refund Policy before you hit that 'pay' button. My Reviews of each product clearly list each tool's refund policy. (Down at the bottom of each review). And, for the tools I've reviewed so far, it's very simple to get a refund. If you are having difficulty, email me, and I'll give you the relevant page you need to get your money back easily.
Software that isn't a rip off
I hope you haven't been ripped off like I was with some of the products I bought! (Sorry if I sound a little bitter!) OK lets stop being morbid here. The good news. I did eventually find two bits of software that weren't a rip off. One's even a budget tool. Firstly, I'd recommend:
Registry Easy
I also recommend you look into:
RegCure
